Bright Journals provides vital support for budding medical students
Donations collected from alumni and friends and distributed through the University’s Cascade fund have been able to support a student led e-mentoring scheme over the past academic year run by Nottingham medical students.
The scheme for local students applying to study Medicine has nurtured a total of 65 mentoring partnerships this year. Mentors have engaged with students from a wide range of backgrounds who are interested in pursuing a career in Medicine, some of whom may be the only student at their school applying to study the subject at University.
Ruth Parks, Bright Journals co-ordinator and 4th year medical student said "I would like to thank our donors for their support of our project. We appreciate that it is difficult to commit to funding a scheme run entirely by students and where the outcome is not necessarily known. However, the difference it has made to one student, let alone the 65 currently using our scheme, is incredible and cannot be replicated in any other way."
Judith Franklin, Assistant Registrar at the University Medical School, points out that “The project is entirely in line with the School and University’s strategies to widen participation, but as it is organised by and for students offers a valuable extra dimension.”
A further 30 mentors have already been recruited for next academic year and it is hoped that students in other departments at The University of Nottingham can also take part in the Bright Journals programme in the future, entering into partnerships with students interested in studying a degree in their own subject area.
As Ruth has found as well as the benefit to those applying for University there are also many benefits for the student mentors too: "This project has allowed me to communicate with a diverse range of people from many different backgrounds, which will certainly help me as a future doctor working with a wide range of people. I have developed my time management skills as it has been a challenge to manage my studies with the organisation of this project."
