Alumni Sports Challenge Weekend 2012
Come back to Nottingham and re-live your sporting days!

Sat, 16 Jun, 2012 09:00 - Sun, 17 Jun, 2012 17:00

So you were good at sport while you were at the University eh?

Current University of Nottingham students want to see if you’ve still got what it takes. So put the weekend of 16th-17th June in your diary and clean the mud off your boots – the Alumni Sports Challenge Weekend is back.

The weekend provides an opportunity for past and present students to play in a series of Sports to contest the Alumni Challenge Trophy.

A collection of the university's sporting alumni

Alumni teams who have already declared they’re up for it include men’s basketball, men’s football, women’s football, men’s hockey, women’s hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, tennis and netball. More than 150 alumni returned to the University last year for the inaugural event, which saw alumni wipe the board with the current students, but we’d like even more to make the return trip this year.

So if you fancy a sport-focused return to campus alongside a nostalgic beer, or cocktail in the Portland Building and a chance to meet some old friends, why not come along on your own or with a group of friends. For further information contact or visit the Facebook page.

Dan Tilley, Director of Sport commented on the weekend; “The Alumni sports weekend is a great way of extending the affinity that students have for the institution through sport, way beyond their graduation. As well as the obvious enjoyment that the event itself brings, with the alumni hoping to prove that the wisdom that comes with age rules over youth and enthusiasm, the weekend also provides a great opportunity for the students to interact with their predecessors and hopefully make useful contacts for the future, whilst also benefitting from their experience.

“We’re also looking to attract high-profile sponsorship for the event to make it an even better experience so if there is anyone out there looking to support this fantastic weekend of multi sport we’d like to hear from you.”

One of the closest encounters last year was fought on the basketball court where the match was tied at 64 - 64 until the final two minutes when the alumni team raised their game to win 72-64.

The alumni basketball team spanned the years 1980-2010 with the most senior being Ian Burlison who graduated 28 years ago in Chemical Engineering with the class of 1983. Now an IT consultant, Ian travelled to Nottingham for the match from Sunderland with his father; “It was a real trip down memory lane for me and my father who used to drop me off at Cripps Hall all those years ago!”.

Ian began his basketball playing days at the university and at 6’10” tall was a real asset to the team. In 1983 they reached the final of the UAU Championships where they narrowly lost to LSE.
Ian still plays regularly back home in Sunderland in both the Durham and Tyne Met Leagues.

“It is great to be back in Nottingham to wear the team kit and to have the chance to re-live those wonderful days of the past!  I think the alumni challenge is a great idea, I can see it will provide a great opportunity for recent graduates to come back, to play with and against their former team mates. Even for older graduates it provides a perfect opportunity for meeting up with past team mates or the chance to come back and take a look at the University and see how it has developed. I expect the event will become more popular each year to the extent where the challenge might be to accommodate everyone who would like to take part.

“I have no doubt it will help strengthen the connection between the alumni and the university, and build links between past and future students.

“It was quite nostalgic to be back after 25+ years, I made sure I visited all my favourite places and it was nice to see how certain parts of the campus had developed, while other parts were pretty much as I remembered them. My only regret was not getting to the Portland bar for a pint. The challenge match was, enjoyably competitive, and was played in great spirit in a fun, friendly atmosphere.”
