Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, in association with The University of Nottingham Children and Childhood Network and Centre for Advanced Studies, invites you to a seminar: Two Faces of Childhood Adversity: Young Carers and Refugee Children Venue: The Senate Chamber, Trent Building, University Park The seminar focuses on two groups of children in adversity: young carers and children from refugee and asylum-seeking families, both priorities within Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, which is aiming to change lives, tackle global challenges and shape the future. Official Census figures suggest that 2% of all children (175,000) are carers; BBC research conducted with the University in 2010 found that at least 8% of secondary school children were involved in caring roles, bringing the UK figure to 700,000. Many provide care at considerable cost to their own childhood, development and psycho-social well-being, but many also report positive outcomes. The implications for policy and professional interventions are identified and discussed. Refugee children: Dr Roda Madziva and Dr Nicola Pitchford The Children and Childhood Network and the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum have worked together for a year with children from refugee and asylum-seeking families. Their stories revealed many complexities in adapting to UK society while maintaining cultural links with their homeland. We will use their stories to demonstrate the hurdles they face with integrating into UK culture and how they have overcome difficulties. Their resilience in the face of extreme adversity can help us learn how to improve quality of care in key aspects of child welfare, such as health, education, and family services, so as to promote long-term adjustment and psychological well-being.
